Four Desjardins SOLO solutions

Select a need below to narrow the options. Your actual eligibility, benefit amount, exclusions, premiums and payment period depend on the policy, underwriting and your individual circumstances.

Self-employed, contract workers and some difficult-to-insure applicants

SOLO Essential Disability Income

Coverage for less traditional work profiles

An income-protection option worth exploring for eligible higher-risk occupations, self-employed or contract workers, and people who may not qualify for traditional disability insurance.

Why prepare?

Your bills don't stop when your income does.

A disabling illness or injury can affect your household cash flow. A disability policy is not the same as life insurance or critical illness insurance: it is principally designed to address qualifying loss of earning capacity or eligible obligations while you are alive.

  • Employees: review workplace group disability benefits and potential gaps.
  • Self-employed: understand how much income you could replace without employer benefits.
  • Families with debts: distinguish covering personal living costs from protecting specific loan payments.
  • Farm producers: discuss occupational and income-documentation considerations.
  • Near-retirement households: assess how an unexpected earnings interruption might affect long-term savings.
SOLO Disability Income vs. SOLO Loan Insurance

Income coverage aims to help replace qualifying earnings, subject to contractual terms. Loan coverage focuses on eligible recurring loan and lease obligations. A needs analysis determines whether one, the other, or a suitable combination should be explored.

Not all disabilities qualify automatically.

Definitions of disability, applicable waiting and benefit periods, occupational rules, exclusions and other limitations must be reviewed in the actual contract and illustration.

Practical planning

What income would your household need during an interruption?

Use this simple monthly budget worksheet to identify an illustrative income gap. This is not an insurance quote, an eligibility assessment, or an estimate of policy benefits.

  • Consider regular household expenses, including rent or mortgage payments.
  • Account for reliable income that would continue during disability.
  • Review existing employer or individually owned disability protection.
  • Ask about coordinating multiple benefits and coverage limits.

Your questions answered

Before choosing disability insurance

What is the difference between disability insurance and critical illness insurance?

Disability income coverage generally provides periodic benefits when you meet the contract's definition of disability. Critical illness insurance generally pays a lump-sum benefit for a qualifying diagnosis or procedure, subject to its contract. They address different risks and may complement each other.

Can a self-employed or contract worker apply?

Potentially. Desjardins SOLO Essential Disability Income is positioned for certain non-traditional or higher-risk profiles. Application eligibility, acceptable occupations, income evidence and any medical exclusions must be verified.

Does SOLO Loan Insurance automatically pay off my mortgage?

No. It is described as providing monthly benefits toward eligible recurring loan or lease payments under qualifying circumstances. The policy conditions and benefit limits determine what is payable; it should not be presented as an automatic full loan payoff.

How much coverage should I buy?

Review your essential monthly expenses, net earnings, existing employer benefits, personal savings, waiting-period affordability and current debt obligations. A licensed advisor can assess suitable options and available limits.

Are benefit payments tax-free?

Tax treatment depends on plan design, premium payer, ownership and other factors. Do not assume benefits are tax-free without confirming the arrangement with a qualified advisor or tax professional.

Protect the livelihood behind the farm

SOLO Agriculture

Disability coverage for qualifying farm producers, with an income calculation that may recognize amortization costs associated with substantial investments in a farming business.

First $1,200Monthly benefit not integrated or coordinated for the first 36 months of total disability, under applicable provisions
Day-one benefitHospitalization or day surgery for selected waiting periods of 90 days or less
5× monthly amountDeath benefit when the insured dies while receiving disability monthly payments
1. Features and income protection

Qualifying total disability caused by illness or accident may trigger a monthly benefit to help replace personal income. The agricultural income methodology takes account of farm-specific major investments and may permit amortization expenses in the calculation of insurable income.

For qualifying hospitalization or day surgery, payments may begin on day one even with a selected waiting period of up to 90 days. Claim definitions and contractual conditions still apply.

2. Product description and target market
  • Recognized agricultural producer who owns an agricultural business.
  • Must hold at least 20% of the shares in the agricultural business, according to the supplied eligibility description.
  • An advisor should establish the applicable occupation class before selecting Agricultural Producer (Agriculture) under occupation/income information in the illustration software.
3. Particularities and illustrations

Because farm cash flow, business assets and personal income may differ from salaried employment, the insurable-income calculation requires review of supporting agricultural financial information. The first-$1,200 provision is not a blanket promise that every applicant qualifies for a $1,200 payment.

4. Sales material and 5. Contract clauses

Request the current Desjardins illustration, product guide and policy wording from the advisor. Confirm waiting-period selections, occupation classification, total-disability definition, integration provisions, death benefit and claim documentation before describing a feature as contractually guaranteed.
